Mickey Cranks Club Welfare Officer (CWO)

Appointing a trained Club Welfare Officer (CWO) is a requirement for clubs to be affiliated to British Cycling and a key aspect of keeping all members safe. Pete McGrane (riding with the Inters/Inters+) is the Club CWO in Mickey Cranks.

All CWO’s will have completed mandatory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and have completed specific British Cycling (BC) Accredited safeguarding training.

The Club Welfare Officer (CWO) plays a crucial role in safeguarding vulnerable individuals, promoting equality, and fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members and those we interact with.

Roles of the Welfare Officer

MCCC takes the welfare of its members seriously and highlights the key aspects of welfare in the following areas:

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is a top priority within our club, and the welfare officer is responsible for implementing and overseeing safeguarding policies and procedures to protect all members, especially juniors, and vulnerable adults.

The welfare officer is a point of contact for any concerns or issues related to safeguarding and plays a key role in ensuring that the club provides a safe and secure environment for everyone to enjoy their cycling activities.

Equality and inclusion

The welfare officer also plays a pivotal role in promoting equality and inclusion within our club, communicating important information and policy changes from BC. It is essential that all members feel valued, respected, and included, regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, ability, or background.

The welfare officer works to ensure that the club’s activities, policies, and practices are inclusive and accessible to all, and that any instances of discrimination, breaches of club policy or inequality are addressed promptly and effectively.

Space to voice concerns

The welfare officer serves as a confidential and approachable resource for members who may be experiencing any form of harassment, bullying, or discrimination by providing a safe and supportive space for members to voice their concerns and seek assistance.

The ultimate aim is to help create a culture of respect, trust, and accountability within our club, where all members can participate in club activities with confidence and peace of mind.

Alerting members to poor conditions

During winter months, you will find the CWO alerting club members to potential hazards (adverse weather events etc) and making decisions regarding abandonment of organised club rides. CWO’s also have a responsibility to alert BC to incidents which occur on organised club rides and events specifically where harm or injury has resulted and/or where a third party is involved.

Please do inform the CWO if you or another rider in a group you have been leading has been involved in an incident.
